MODERN JOINT REPLACEMENT MYTHS

Video Transcript

Let's bust three myths about hip and knee replacement that keep active adults suffering longer than they need to.

I'm Doctor Cynthia Kahlenberg, an orthopedic surgeon in Stamford, Connecticut... and I specialize in hip and knee replacement for active adults.

Myth 1: 'You have to wait until you're almost disabled.' In reality, waiting too long can make recovery harder and make your world smaller. We want to intervene when pain is clearly limiting your life despite reasonable treatments.

Myth 2: 'You'll be in unbearable pain after surgery.' We use modern anesthesia and multi‐modal pain control to keep you as comfortable as possible. While it's true that the first few weeks can be a little rough, the majority of our patients are surprised by how manageable it is.

Myth 3: 'You'll never do the things you love again.' While it's important to give your body time to recover, many patients safely return to hiking, cycling, skiing, golf, pickle ball, and playing with their kids. The goal of surgery is not just to remove pain—it's also to restore function and quality of life.

If these myths have been holding you back and you're dealing with hip or knee pain, reach out to my office in Stamford so we can talk through what's actually realistic for you.
